Most Common Eye Conditions

Most people have eye problems at one time or another. Some are minor and will go away on their own, or are easy to treat at home. Others need a specialist’s care.

Most cataracts develop slowly over the course of years. The main symptom is blurry vision. Having cataracts can be like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. When a cataract interferes with someone's usual activities, the cloudy lens can be replaced with a clear, artificial lens. This is generally a safe, outpatient procedure.

Nearsightedness tends to run in families. Faraway objects appear blurry. The condition may develop gradually or rapidly. Treatment options include eyeglasses, contact lenses, and surgery such as LASIK.

With astigmatism, the front surface of the eye or the lens, inside the eye, is curved differently in one direction than the other. A common symptom is blurry vision. Treatments include prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Laser-assisted surgery, such as LASIK, also may help.

Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, is a common type of refractive error where distant objects may be seen more clearly than objects that are near. However, people experience hyperopia differently. Some people may not notice any problems with their vision, especially when they are young.

Keratoconus is a vision disorder that occurs when the normally round cornea (the front part of the eye) becomes thin and irregular (cone) shaped. This abnormal shape prevents the light entering the eye from being focused correctly on the retina and causes distortion of vision.
